ADVANCED INVESTING IN EQUITIES AND FUNDS

A "hands-on" course

This seminar is designed for people who have already followed INSAM's Nest-Egg course as an introduction to major investment instruments, stocks and funds (based mainly on stocks). The course is open to others who have already covered the basic elements such as understanding market behaviour and being able to understand the "fundamental" value of shares and of funds.

This course has two major elements to take participants beyond where Nest-Egg left off:

live use is made of the Internet to generate up-to-date information on target investments, both stocks and funds,

a computerised game is played to give participants the feel of handling investments in highly variable market conditions.

With regard to the work on stocks, the course goes beyond the fairly elementary concepts of PE and EPS to consider "free cashflow", a measure which analysts are using more and more as a means of identifying value stocks. The course also covers the market phenomena of today in which growth expectations take priority in certain high-tech stocks over underlying value.

This highly practical course will leave participants able to build their own portfolio of shares and funds, although the INSAM team will always be available to give personal advice and assistance without removing from the investor his or her personal choice and responsibility.

KEY QUESTIONS

Some of the points to be discussed during this seminar include:

What are the basic questions I need to ask myself before building a portfolio?  Consider age, risk aversion, currency, dependency on investment income.
What system will I want to adopt to select and maintain a portfolio of stocks?  Consider how much time is available and needed to follow a stock portfolio.
To what extend would I be more comfortable with at least part of my investments in investment funds?  Consider how to choose the funds and spread investments amongst them.
Can I get on top of the more sophisticated techniques of assessing the value of a stock, including concepts linked to cashflow?
What is the difference between value and growth-based funds and which style should I favour?  Should bonds play a greater role in my portfolio as I get older?
